LED Industry 2016 and Beyond

After the historic COP21 summit in Paris, the world’s attention is on climate change and the effects of energy consumption. Lighting accounts for around 15% of the world’s electricity consumption, and that demand is set to rise by 50% by 2030.  With the population growing, urbanization increasing and billions of people being connected to energy grids, energy efficient lighting is at the forefront of people’s minds. This renewed focus could mean major developments for the LED lighting market. As 2015 comes to a close, we look into 2016 and beyond, to identify possible trends for the LED lighting market.

Indoor Growing– With more research into the effects of climate change, there will be a greater demand for technologies that enable the growing of crops in a factory environment, rather than out in open flooded or arid areas.

Less Specialization– Less talk about lamps and lighting products, more about systems which also include lighting and controls.

Consumption– Energy efficient lighting will be important, but the focus will shift toward reducing energy consumed by lighting.

Smart Lighting– Connected lighting will drastically change the landscape of computing devices, including PC’s, smartphones, tablets, and activity trackers. Expect companies to develop technology to create easy to use, and convenience applications for the new connected devices.

Payback– Connected and smart lighting, will be cost-justified using a creative mix of simple payback, life-cycle cost and a cost-benefit analysis which integrates human factors considerations

Cities get more involved– Cities and towns around the world are installing LED streetlights in an effort to reduce energy bills and cut emissions. If done in the world’s largest 500 cities, lighting upgrades could save up to $243.2 billion in energy costs to 2030, according to the New Climate Economy report.

Companies change their strategy– Recently Ikea announced that in 2016, it will no longer sell non-LED light bulbs. In addition, the company says it will change more than one million light sources in the store to LED energy-efficient lighting. Expect other large companies to follow this trend.

Non-visible LED light applications increasingly valued- Due to intense LED pricing competition, manufacturers are searching for new applications to boost profitability. This has led to an increase in LED applications in the non-visible spectrum such as UV or IR LED’s. The largest market for these applications include curing, disinfection, security and remote control applications. However expect applications such as proximity sensors, biometrics, and mobile device security to increase in both the IR LED and UV LED market in the near future.

15 Surprising Facts about LED Lighting Industry

Here are some cool facts about LED lighting that might surprise you;

  1. LED’s use at least 75% less energy than halogen bulbs
  2. LED last 35-50 times longer than halogen and up to 10 times longer than CFL’s
  3. LED’s are “instant-on” and require no warmup time
  4. LED lights fitted with sensors can automatically know how much illumination is needed, and where it should be directed. The lights will adjust to a crowded party or to a dark parking garage.
  5. Specific light recipes have been shown to speed patient-recovery times in hospitals. Meanwhile, new home medical devices are reaching the market in Europe that utilize intense blue LED lights to ease back pain.
  6. WIFI connected “smart bulbs” can be operated from a smart phone
  7. LED don’t give off heat like CFL’s which helps lower your A/C bill
  8. Energy use in America is doubling every 20 years. LED’s can help reduce this number. Only about 10% of the energy used in a single lightbulb is used to create light, the rest is used to create heat. LED light bulbs, use about 80% less energy in total than standard bulbs
  9. It is estimated that in 2014, the United States used approximately 412 billion kWh of electricity just for lighting
  10. The United States uses approximately 23% of the world’s energy, yet it only holds about 5% of the world’s population
  11. K-12 schools in the United States spend more than $6 billion on energy use, or more than they spend on textbooks and computers combined
  12. Lighting costs make up approximately 20% of all of the electricity used in the United States today
  13. LEDs contain no mercury and have a much smaller environmental impact than halogen or fluorescent bulbs
  14. In 2012, about 49 million LEDs were installed in the U.S. — saving about $675 million in annual energy costs. Switching entirely to LED lights over the next two decades could save the U.S. $250 billion in energy costs, reduce electricity consumption for lighting by nearly 50 percent and avoid 1,800 million metric tons of carbon emissions
  15. Switching to LEDs can reduce electrical and maintenance costs of a commercial building by up to 30%

Terms to Know in LED Lighting

As the LED lighting industry grows more mature, the lighting market is filled with LED lighting solutions. For customers, it is really difficult to figure out which LED lighting solution is most suitable for them in terms of various demands. This article will give you some tips on terminology you need to know. What used to be simple has become a bit complicated. However after learning these few terms, it will become much clearer and you will see the light!

LED: LED’s, or light-emitting diodes, are a solid state technology that have no filament, glass envelope, gas, or mercury. LED’s produce light by the movement of electrons that results from applying an electric voltage difference across a semiconductor material.

o When looking at lighting and watts, you are not looking at how much light a bulb puts out when looking at watts, but how much energy a bulb uses to put out that amount of light.

Lumens– In traditional terms a watt is a measurement of how much electrical power a device consumes.

o a lumen is a measurement of the amount of light that is contained in a certain area
o A much simpler definition of a lumen would be that one lumen is equivalent to the amount of light put out by one birthday candle when you are standing one foot away from it. If a light bulb puts out 100 lumens, imagine standing one foot away from a cake with one hundred birthday candles on it.
o Lumens are more accurate way of measuring the amount of light a particular bulb is putting out, because lumens are a direct measurement of light output
o The true measurement unit of luminous flux (or brightness) is the lumen (lm). Lumen measurements are an acceptable method to compare LED’s to traditional light sources.
o Lumens Per Watt- Similar to Miles/Gallon in a car

Driver– A LED driver is a device that manages power and controls the current flow for an LED lighting product. What makes a driver different from conventional power supplies, is that an LED driver responds to the ever-changing needs of the LED, or circuit of LED’s, by supplying a constant amount of power to the LED, as its electrical properties change with temperature.

Retrofit– A simple definition of a retrofits the renovation of your old lighting fixtures and/or bulbs that improves the lighting output and temperature of light all while emitting less heat and saving energy.

How a Facility Executive Can Increase Their Budget

How a Facility Executive Can Increase Their Budget
Shrinking Capital Budgets are a trend that many facility managers are facing. It is difficult to get a “yes” from senior management, even though there may be a leaky roof that needs to be fixed. Facility managers understand that it is not about how much money is available, it is making sure money is available when needed. In order for a facility manager to have his budget increase in the future, they need to show that they are adding value to the organization today. The question is how?
The best way to add value to the company and deliver measurable results is to improve how a facility operates. Improving efficiency is something that can be measured and the savings can be built into the next year’s budget. One way to achieve savings and show measurable ROI is by moving to LED lighting systems. Saving energy means saving money-both in the present and in the future. LED lighting systems have proven ROI and the results can be seen in the power bill immediately. If a facility manager’s recommendation starts saving 25%-30% off the annual power bill, that is measurable money saved, and their budget is sure to increase in the future based on the savings.
When approaching the CEO or CFO, you want to remember the 4 P’s, Professional, Practical, Proof and Perspective. The presentation should be easy to navigate, include measurable data, benchmarks and include real world statistics. You also want to include their language. This includes ROI, Payback Period, Total Cost of Ownership and Net Present Value. The first place to start would be to get a free energy audit of your facilities. Once you have this data, you would be able to solve the other key performance indicators the executives would want to know. Energy audits offer a beneficial way to examine energy needs and measure their costs against the return on investment for all proposed improvements. Below are some helpful articles that should help you get the ball rolling after your audit. For your FREE ENERGY AUDIT, call Accurate Technologies Inc. at 813-623-2481 or enter your information online at http://www.accuratetechinc.com .

Why you should Switch your T8 Fluorescent Lamps with T8 LED Tubes

Infographic for LED
Infographic for LED

Why you should Switch your T8 Fluorescent Lamps with T8 LED Tubes

  • Energy Savings
    • T8 LED tubes are up to 30% more efficient than Fluorescent Lamps
    • Our AT-T8 uses only (blank) Watts compared
  • Improves Fixture Efficiency
    • LEDs offer directional light (illumination exactly where you need it). Compared to Fluorescents which have multi-directional light, which mean some of the light is lost into the fixture and unnecessary places
  • Air-Conditioning Savings
    • LED’s run cooler than fluorescent lamps which could lead to money savings and makes air-conditioning more efficient
  • Mercury-Free and RoHS Compliant
    • There is no mercury or glass content with LED’s, which makes them environmental friendly
  • Longer Life and Sustainability
    • Because the light-emitting diodes don’t degrade in the same manner that the gas escapes a fluorescent or the filament burns out in an incandescent, LED lamps have a much longer lifespan than either of those lighting technologies. Some of the newerLED lamps generally have an expected lifespan of over 50,000 hours.
  • LED Does Not Give Off UV
    • LED replacement bulbs does not emit any light in the non-visible light spectrum (UV).  No UV reduces fading
    • Fluorescent T8 bulbs emit UV/IR light.

Light at the End of the Tunnel for Healthcare Facilities

Signs of Life for Hospital Lighting

The healthcare industry has experienced budgetary turmoil over the past several years due to unpredictable legislation, rising costs and a changing market. But hospitals and other facilities can look forward to relief from the commercial lighting industry.

Hospital Room
LED lighting reduces energy and maintenance costs, and allows creative lighting designs to become possible.

LED technology holds the promise of dramatically lower energy consumption. This translates directly into a friendlier monthly bill from the local electric utility, an immediate benefit. But that’s not where the advantage of LED lighting ends. Maintenance budgets will also see a reduction, since the new generation of lighting requires little maintenance, meaning bulb and ballast changes, over a longer lifespan- sometimes as long as 15 years.

Covered parking areas usually have the lighting turned on twenty four hours a day. This makes the parking areas an obvious candidate for a lighting upgrade.
Covered parking areas usually have the lighting turned on twenty four hours a day. This makes the parking areas an obvious candidate for a lighting upgrade.

While most commercial buildings currently use fluorescent lighting as an energy efficient light source, LEDs are characteristically superior in several ways.  As just mentioned above, LED lighting emits greater light output per unit of energy input than fluorescent. Secondly, less frequent maintenance. But here are some more subtle issues that may not be as obvious to the financial decision maker faced with the decision to upgrade the lighting.

Toxicity: fluorescent lighting technology necessarily requires the presence of elemental mercury to work. Mercury is highly toxic to our bodies, so it’s ironic that the typical hospital, dedicated to caring for the sick, have tens of thousands of fragile glass tubes ensconced directly above their patients, filled with toxic chemicals and surging with electricity. LED products contain no mercury, no lead, and only trace elements at most of any substance that might be considered mildly toxic.

Flickering: fluorescent lighting actually blinks on and off at a high frequency, usually 120 times per second. This can translate into migraines, eye fatigue and general lethargy. A healthcare facility might see the effects of this problem in lower worker productivity and a higher number of sick days. Making the change to LED lighting eliminates this phenomenon, because LEDs emit consistent light. If the fixture employs a high quality diode, the appearance of the entire room can be vastly improved as well. It’s important to specify an LED solution which meets or exceeds all safety and performance standards.

Nurse Station
Hospital corridor lighting never shuts off, so energy savings can be maximized here. A clean lighting design creates a friendly atmosphere and healthy, psychological benefits for patients and medical staff.

Working with a conscientious lighting designer has it’s advantages as well. Not all fixtures are cost effective candidates for retrofitting or upgrading. It’s important to know the relative cost vs. benefit of every option, and a good designer will recognize the most advantageous places to start. Parking areas and corridors are generally the first places to consider, since the lighting in these areas rarely shuts off.

Finally, a thorough business proposal is essential for clear decision making. All available financial factors should be analyzed, and the results of the analysis should be presented with no confusion.

While today’s business environment is challenging for healthcare facilities, lighting choices can provide some relief for financial and maintenance decision makers.
