What’s New in the LED Industry?

The LED industry is constantly evolving and new trends and technology are being developed at a rapid pace. Below are a few of the latest trends in the industry to help keep you up to date.

Controllability

The next big thing in lighting will be connectivity or lighting controls. Lighting control is the ability to regulate the level and quality of light in a given space for different situations. Controlling light not only enhances the experience, improves visibility, but it can also result in up to 70% reduction in lighting costs. By upgrading the controls on your lighting system, you can automatically save energy by using occupancy sensors that will automatically turn on or off depending on whether the room is occupied. Daylight harvesting using photo-sensors, can detect natural light levels and adjust your lighting accordingly to save energy. By using sensors for occupancy and daylight harvesting, you can dim or turn off lighting when it is not being used. Turning the lights down by just a small percentage will result in energy savings without forfeiting the room’s light levels. The use of lighting controls can help create the perfect balance between natural and electric light and create an inviting and energy efficient environment.

The Internet of Things

The internet of things (IoT) is the network of physical devices, vehicles, buildings and other items—embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and network connectivity that enable these objects to collect and exchange data. Lighting is an ideal setting for internet-of-things services to be built on, because it’s already in the ceiling of every building wired up and ready to go. You only have to add sensors, such as photocells, cameras or occupancy sensors, and a data connection.

Wireless

Everything’s going wireless these days, and lighting control is no exception. It’s going to be more and more common for the user’s control device to be a tablet or phone that’s not wired to anything. The advantage of this new technology means there is no need to install new wires on to most current systems.

Li-Fi

We’ve all heard of Wi-Fi, but the next thing might be Li-Fi. Instead of accessing the Internet wirelessly using radio frequencies, like Wi-Fi does, you use the visible light spectrum. Li-Fi uses the light waves from LED light bulbs to transmit data so it provides illumination and wireless data communications at the same time and with the same device. Wherever there is an LED light, there is the potential with Li-Fi to access the Internet at incredibly fast speeds in a safe and secure manner. Fundamentally, the competitive advantages of Li-Fi over traditional radio-based communications stem from the physics of the propagation medium. Light by its very nature is directional, does not penetrate opaque objects and is inherently safe, offering more secure and better localized wireless communications. Scientists have made it possible to achieve speeds of 224 gigabits per second in the lab using Li-Fi earlier this year, and the potential technology could forever change the way we view and use the Internet.

Light tracking

Lighting isn’t just about light any more. It’s about data. Indoor positioning that tracks people’s position using LED luminaires and their smartphones would help bring the power of GPS indoors. Retailers could enhance the shopping experience with indoor positioning and in-store promotions, giving shoppers new reasons to buy. Hospitals could use the technology to help patients arrive on time for appointments and reduce stress. Businesses could help warehouse staff work more efficiently with easier product finding and location-based stocking instructions. Employers could give employees lighting and temperature controls for their workspaces, or could suggest nearby empty meeting rooms based on current location, making them more comfortable and productive. The applications are limitless and the market is just now understanding how to utilize the technology.

Best Line Oil upgrades to LED lighting to better serve the community

Best Line Oil Co. Inc., one of the largest lubricant distributors in central Florida, upgraded the warehouse lighting at its Tampa facility. The company partnered with Accurate Technologies, Inc. to equip the warehouse with Flextronics 4 Module LED fixtures, which increased light levels while simultaneously cutting down on the company’s energy bill.

Kirk Davis of Accurate Technologies states, “At the beginning of this project, I surveyed the warehouse and found that the lighting was well below standards and not all fixtures were working properly. Also, employees were complaining and errors pulling product happened more than normal.  After surveying the warehouse I did a drawing of the existing lighting system and forwarded the information to our Fixture Agent and requested a photometric layout done using existing locations and also by adding a row of lights in the center. After review with the customer we decided on the Flextronics 4 Module LED fixture with over 24,000 lumens and 95% efficiency compared to the 2 lamp 8 Ft. Fluorescent fixture with just over 10,000 lumens and 60% efficiency. We did a one for one swap and increased the light levels significantly.  The owner and employees are ecstatic. Since we put in LED product with dimming drivers and sensors on each fixture we now have the ability to dim the fixtures or turn them off when no one is in the area. The old lamps had an average life of 12,000 hours and now the new LED fixtures have a L70 rating projected at 200,000 hours.”

President of Best Line Oil, Al Garcia, III, immediately noticed the incredible difference in the warehouse stating, “There is an incredible difference from what we had here, you can’t believe how happy the guys working in my warehouse are now!”  The lighting upgrade will also generate long-term energy reductions and maintenance cost savings in addition to the better light quality so that Best Line Oil can continue to deliver the quality of service to the community for which they have been known

LED Industry 2016 and Beyond

After the historic COP21 summit in Paris, the world’s attention is on climate change and the effects of energy consumption. Lighting accounts for around 15% of the world’s electricity consumption, and that demand is set to rise by 50% by 2030.  With the population growing, urbanization increasing and billions of people being connected to energy grids, energy efficient lighting is at the forefront of people’s minds. This renewed focus could mean major developments for the LED lighting market. As 2015 comes to a close, we look into 2016 and beyond, to identify possible trends for the LED lighting market.

Indoor Growing– With more research into the effects of climate change, there will be a greater demand for technologies that enable the growing of crops in a factory environment, rather than out in open flooded or arid areas.

Less Specialization– Less talk about lamps and lighting products, more about systems which also include lighting and controls.

Consumption– Energy efficient lighting will be important, but the focus will shift toward reducing energy consumed by lighting.

Smart Lighting– Connected lighting will drastically change the landscape of computing devices, including PC’s, smartphones, tablets, and activity trackers. Expect companies to develop technology to create easy to use, and convenience applications for the new connected devices.

Payback– Connected and smart lighting, will be cost-justified using a creative mix of simple payback, life-cycle cost and a cost-benefit analysis which integrates human factors considerations

Cities get more involved– Cities and towns around the world are installing LED streetlights in an effort to reduce energy bills and cut emissions. If done in the world’s largest 500 cities, lighting upgrades could save up to $243.2 billion in energy costs to 2030, according to the New Climate Economy report.

Companies change their strategy– Recently Ikea announced that in 2016, it will no longer sell non-LED light bulbs. In addition, the company says it will change more than one million light sources in the store to LED energy-efficient lighting. Expect other large companies to follow this trend.

Non-visible LED light applications increasingly valued- Due to intense LED pricing competition, manufacturers are searching for new applications to boost profitability. This has led to an increase in LED applications in the non-visible spectrum such as UV or IR LED’s. The largest market for these applications include curing, disinfection, security and remote control applications. However expect applications such as proximity sensors, biometrics, and mobile device security to increase in both the IR LED and UV LED market in the near future.

Terms to Know in LED Lighting

As the LED lighting industry grows more mature, the lighting market is filled with LED lighting solutions. For customers, it is really difficult to figure out which LED lighting solution is most suitable for them in terms of various demands. This article will give you some tips on terminology you need to know. What used to be simple has become a bit complicated. However after learning these few terms, it will become much clearer and you will see the light!

T8 LED

LED: LED’s, or light-emitting diodes, are a solid state technology that have no filament, glass envelope, gas, or mercury. LED’s produce light by the movement of electrons that results from applying an electric voltage difference across a semiconductor material.

o When looking at lighting and watts, you are not looking at how much light a bulb puts out when looking at watts, but how much energy a bulb uses to put out that amount of light.

Lumens– In traditional terms a watt is a measurement of how much electrical power a device consumes.

o a lumen is a measurement of the amount of light that is contained in a certain area
o A much simpler definition of a lumen would be that one lumen is equivalent to the amount of light put out by one birthday candle when you are standing one foot away from it. If a light bulb puts out 100 lumens, imagine standing one foot away from a cake with one hundred birthday candles on it.
o Lumens are more accurate way of measuring the amount of light a particular bulb is putting out, because lumens are a direct measurement of light output
o The true measurement unit of luminous flux (or brightness) is the lumen (lm). Lumen measurements are an acceptable method to compare LED’s to traditional light sources.
o Lumens Per Watt- Similar to Miles/Gallon in a car

Nurse Station

Driver– A LED driver is a device that manages power and controls the current flow for an LED lighting product. What makes a driver different from conventional power supplies, is that an LED driver responds to the ever-changing needs of the LED, or circuit of LED’s, by supplying a constant amount of power to the LED, as its electrical properties change with temperature.

Retrofit– A simple definition of a retrofits the renovation of your old lighting fixtures and/or bulbs that improves the lighting output and temperature of light all while emitting less heat and saving energy.
